Your assessment is mostly carried out in our Therapy Centre in Needwood, located near Derby in Staffordshire. On occasions when necessary, we can complete assessments in school or in a home visit. In all instances, we aim to make our assessments fun, engaging and completely age-appropriate.
Assessments usually take around two hours. We do ask you to be flexible as this is a bespoke process and is very much dependent on your child and their individual needs. As Occupational Therapists, we are concerned with everything that stops your child or young person accessing everyday activities and age-appropriate independence.
We assess sensory, perceptual and motor functioning. We use standardised and non-standardised assessments and gather information in a variety of ways including information gathering, observation and one-to-one interaction. With every assessment, we look at ways to best understand the functional difficulties and barriers individual children experience everyday. An assessment involves desk-based tasks, play and discussion. Sometimes, depending on pre-identified issues in each case, we may ask you to complete a range of questionnaires before your assessment appointment.
After your assessment has been completed, we compile a full report (including quantifiable information appropriate for EHC plan application where required). The report will have practical recommendations for home and school settings to help your child/young person become able in reaching their full potential when trying to function in activities of daily living.
The report will be ready in five working days after the assessment unless we are awaiting further information from another professional or organisation.
